Brief story about the foibles of war criminal Karadzic

Karadzic's Secret Life

The Serbian war criminal Karadzic was arrested this month. In all of the media outrage, what is the information of biggest interest to his fellow Serbians? Is it the war crimes that he committed? Was it the number of people dead at his hands? No. The information drawing the most attention about Karadzic in his country is the secret life that he lived while avoiding capture.  Unlike Saddam Hussein, who hid in hole in the ground, Karadzic hid in plain sight. Under the pseudonym Dr. Dragan David Dabic, Karadzic lived among his fellow Serbs as an alternative medicine advisor. Rumors of time spent in New York obtaining a degree and of grandchildren living in Los Angeles are some of the hot topics. Another part of the mystery is that he lived out in the open among fellow citizens who describe him as a pleasant and caring individual. Karadzic, disguised only with a beard and long hair, would even frequent a local bar decorated with pictures of himself from his days as a soldier. But is he a war criminal or a hero? Depending on which side of the war you were on defines the status of Karadzic. Some Serbians were upset with Karadzic's arrest. It will be interesting to find out what other information and notoriety develops as Karadzic readies himself for his trial.
